在隧道建设中，有一种设备从事始发和掘进的机器叫盾构机，具有开挖切削土体、输送土碴、拼装隧道衬砌等功能；但盾构机在隧道衬砌时，是以几块管片进行拼装的，有一种螺丝起连接紧固作用，组装形成园柱形的管道，管片就是圆柱形的墙体；开挖时可有效控制地面沉降、减少对地面建筑物的影响和在水下开挖时不影响水面交通等特点，将各管片组合在一起，形成管道，这种设计成一种直线形或者有一定弧形的紧固连接件，就是管片螺栓。管片螺栓分为环向、纵向。有的设计中环向和纵向规格一致。有的设计中环向和纵向采用两种规格，甚至两种强度等级。一般而言，环向管片螺栓的长度长于纵向管片螺栓。

管片螺栓的常用表面处理有：热镀锌（热浸锌）、达克罗（俗称：锌基铬酸盐）、粉末渗锌、多元复合粉末渗锌等。管片螺栓表面处理的好坏至关重要。因为管片螺栓安装在地下，起到连接管片的作用。它所处的环境潮湿，容易引起螺栓的腐蚀造成生锈。所以，如果螺栓的表面处理未能达到设计要求，造成螺栓在使用过程中生锈等现象，腐蚀到螺栓内部后将影响到螺栓的机械性能及其抗拉强度。
